Essay Writing Competition 2019:

January 15, 2019 – Launch of the Essay Competition
October 23, 2019 – Deadline for submissions
September 30, 2019 – Finalists announced
November 9-10, 2019 – Final Jury CEO Education Best Essay Writing Singapore.
December 11, 2019 – Award Ceremony during the education Conference in Singapore.
NOTE: Submissions will be accepted from January 15 till October 22, 2019.


Awards include:

• A grand prize of US$5,000
• Runner-up prizes of US$1,000 (50 awards)

Authors of the best essays (finalists) will be invited to participate in the World Bank Conference 2019 on Development Economics.

NOTE: The jury reserves the right to modify the allocation depending on the number of winning essays.

The Essay Competition 2019 is organized by the World Bank, the Cities Alliance and the Government of Sweden, in partnership with: ABS Incorporated USA.

Steering Committee and Advisory Committee:

The Essay Competition is organized by the World Bank in partnership with several outstanding academic and civil society institutions who form the Steering Committee and Advisory Committee. The role of those Committees is to determine the topic and format of the contest as well as to ensure a fair and transparent process of selecting the winners.

The Advisory Committee includes representatives of Government of Sweden, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, UN-HABITAT, United Cities and Local Governments.

Review Committee

Essays will be reviewed by the Review Committee, consisting of some members of the Steering Committee and Advisory Committee.

Evaluation criteria include: quality of proposals, structure, coherence of arguments, originality/creativity, style, use of sources and evidence.

The jury will complete their selections of finalists in September 30, 2019, after a three-stage review process. Essays will be blind-reviewed. Finalists will be invited to present their essays to a panel of experts during the Final Jury. The winner(s) will present their award by means of money transfer by the end of January 2019.

The competition is intended for youth aged 18-25 from any country of the world. Anyone born between the year 1992 and 1999 inclusive is invited to take part in the competition. No exceptions will be granted.

If you are a passionate writer in your student life (school/college/university), a teacher or any other interested party, you are welcome to send in your entry and take part in the best essay competition of the season.

How Do Things Work?

  • You have to register yourself as an entrant before 29th December 2017.
  • If you are a teacher sponsoring your students, then you can select up to three essays from each level of academic grade: middle school, high school and college/university.
  • You can send in your entries till 30th December 2017. Once you have submitted your entry, you’ll get a notification mail from us in the first week of August.
  • Follow the idea brief and write your heart out on the given topic. You can select any theme, aspect or approach you like. It’s all about your thoughts and your expression.
  • Your essay must be up to 750 words.
  • English is the official language of the competition.
  • In case of plagiarism, you shall be immediately disqualified.
  • Once you have submitted your entry, you cannot send/publish it anywhere else.

Moreover, you consent to the terms and conditions and agree to abide by the decision of the judges as final.
