img_0113-singapore-zoo-safari-run-2012-zoo-map1The zoo is a place where you can find animals belonging from different parts of the world. In Singapore, there were many different zoos, but they were all small and could not run for a long period. They were located in different parts of the country.

Singapore Zoo PicThe Singapore Zoo came into being in 1973. It was long overdue and luckily opened right on time. At the time of its establishment, the zoo had over 270 animals belonging from 72 different species. It was a rare sight for the Nationals as well as the international visitors who had not witnessed such a spectacular zoo before. The zoo was run by a 130 member staff that made sure that everything was up to the mark and the animals were given proper care.

By the late 1900’s the zoo housed over 1600 animals from 160 different species. These animals were brought in from different countries and areas from around the world. In 2000, the zoo was reconstructed to add more attractions and facilities for the animals as well as the visitors. This increased the revenue and since then the zoo has witnessed a gradual up rise in its demand.

Types of Animals

From different types of monkeys to a variety of wild cats, you can find any animal in the Singapore Zoo. The administration has made sure to make the zoo an environmental friendly place for the animals to live in. The animals are kept in big areas designed according to their habitats. They are separated by water and dry moats to keep the visitors away.

Singapore Zoo PicAs the zoo is a large land, the animals are not confined to one place. They have the privilege to roam around when the visitors leave. You can travel around in the zoo on different means of transport. You can even get horse rides to get to your desired place. Singapore Zoo has the most orangutans living in it in the world. It is not surprising to know that different Doctors often come to stay in the zoo to study these orangutans as they are kept so well and brought up by the best trainers. In the past years, there have been a few incidents where the animals got out of the zoo but they were quickly taken care of.

Events and Shows

Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Singapore Zoo is the different shows it holds for its spectators. Breakfast with an Orangutan is the most liked show. In this, the visitors get to interact with the orangutans.

The zookeepers take charge of explaining the lives of the orangutans to the people who listen keenly and also get to feed the animal. The elephants are guided by the trainees to do different tasks like picking up logs etc. Children get to learn a lot about these animals through a fun way.

Singapore Education – Sample Essay

Education as the Basis of Society

Education is very important for any society. The country of Singapore recognized this importance right after it gained independence in the 1960’s. It became one of the pillars of the society and led them to success and prosperity. Singapore is an island and so they do not have as many opportunities as other countries in terms of natural resources. The one benefit they do have is the hard working people that reside in the area. The people are not only hard working; they are also very kind and honest. They take education seriously as they know how their forefathers struggled to bring the country to where it is today.

Over the years the quality of education being provided has only improved. The schools and colleges are highly competitive and have made way in the international market for schools. The world has come to recognize Singapore as a place where one can get the top education while also experiencing living in a multi-cultural environment. The government of Singapore should be praised for this development as they have introduced reforms which make the education better. The government provides funds to both public and private schools. These vary in amount but a strict check is kept upon the usage of these funds, so they are never misused.

Curriculum

Singapore is a country which has people of different nationalities living there. The cultures and backgrounds of people differ in terms of where they actually migrated from. The language and religious beliefs of the people are also different. Seeing all the differences, it was hard to finalize a curriculum for the entire population to follow in schools and colleges. As English was declared the national language, the medium of education was also declared to be English.

In addition to learning English students are also taught in Malay, Mandarin or Tamil. Singapore is especially noted for its high standard teaching of Math and Sciences. It is ranked first across 140 countries in these subjects. Children with special needs are also catered for and they all have a safe environment to learn in. The foreign system schools are also kept under the check of the government and made sure that their standard is kept in line with the other schools. Homeschooling is also done but is not encouraged because at school level children should get the exposure of meeting and interacting with new people.

Universities

Singapore is probably most popular for its high-quality university education. Over the years it has developed into an international hub where international students come to gain knowledge. Singapore at present has five independent universities. They are the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU), Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and Singapore Institute of Technology. A graduate medical school, Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore, was also established through a joint venture between Duke University School of Medicine and NUS to boost Singapore’s aptitude to expand a lively biomedical center.

Singapore History – Sample Essay

Singapore History Essay – Sample

Singapore was commonly known the “island at the end of a peninsula” in the third century. After the establishment of the first settlements in 1299 AD, the name was changed to Temasek or “Sea Town”. At some point in the 14th century, this small island was named “The Lion City” or Singapura, by the Prince from Palembang.

There on out, Singapore became the ideal trading hub and center of all business transactions due to its strategic location. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, this area was slowly taken over by the European colonial powers, starting with the arrival of the Portuguese at Malacca in 1509. The initial authority of the Portuguese was confronted during the 17th century by the Dutch, who came to be in command of most of the ports in the state. In 1818, Sir Stamford Raffles was selected as the Lieutenant Governor of the British colony at Bencoolen He later moved on to capture Singapore from the Dutch. Thanks to him, Modern Singapore came into existence in the 19th century.

During the Second World War, Singapore was captured by the Japanese. When the war ended, Singapore went back to being a British colony with increased autonomy. In 1959, the intensification of nationalism gave way to sovereignty, and the country’s first ever general elections were held. The People’s Action Party (PAP) won with an overwhelming majority of 43 seats, and Lee Kuan Yew became the first Prime Minister of Singapore. In 1963, Singapore was merged with Malaya, Sarawak and Sabah to form Malaysia. This was done to promote prosperity and strength. However, it did not bode well with Singapore and therefore, it separated and got its got independence from Malaysia on August 9, 1965 to become a self-governing state.

In 1990, Goh Chok Tong took over Lee Kuan Yew’s place in the government and became the second prime minister of Singapore. Goh presented a more open and liberal style of leadership as the country paved its way to increased modernization and development.

After facing increased economic crises with high rates of unemployment and a housing problem, Singapore started on a journey of reconstruction and restoration. This program began in the late 1960s and followed through the 1970s. Singapore’s major focus was on setting up a manufacturing industry with proper mechanization, building big public housing estates and spending revenues generated from taxes on public education. Since its independence, Singapore’s economy has matured growing at an average of nine percent annually.

By 1990, the country emerged as being one of the world most flourishing states with the theories of free market governing the economy and one the highest gross domestic product per capita in all of the Asia. Lee’s programs in Singapore had a deep effect on the Communist leadership in China, who made great efforts to replicate his policies of economic prosperity, entrepreneurship, and containment of aggression, especially during the tenure of Deng Xiaoping. Over 22,000 Chinese executives were sent to Singapore to study its system and policies.

It had a very small market and no international companies or any form of trade. Most of the people were not educated, and that added to the misery. The country did not seem like much at that time but the people knew they had to achieve greatness, and that is what they did. The Singapore government started the Economic Development Board.

The aim was to increase foreign investment and to make Singapore a tourist attraction. The board worked hard and over the years the hard work bore fruit. Singapore has one of the strongest economies now and foreign companies continue to increase their investment.

The Trade of Singapore

Trade is an important factor for any country now. It helps maintain good relations with other countries but most of all it helps make the economy strong. The exports and imports increase sales of a country’s products and the people have a greater variety of things to choose from. Singapore’s main exports include petroleum items, food/beverages, chemicals, textile/garments, electronic components, telecommunication apparatus, and transport equipment. The major imports are aircraft, crude oil and petroleum products, electronic components, radio and television receivers/parts, motor vehicles, chemicals, food/beverages, iron/steel, and textile yarns/fabrics. The reason for such successful trade is that Singapore has always made trade agreements with different countries and that has helped it in reducing trade taxes and costs.

It has free trade agreement with ASEAN and pays reduced import duty to some other countries. Singapore has always dealt fairly in trade and commerce and is one of the fairest trade countries. This is because the government of Singapore is corruption free.

When a country is run by people who have no history of corruption, then naturally the international relations will also be corruption free. The governments of other countries build a relationship of trust with that of Singapore and hope to maintain this relationship in the future.

The Infrastructure of Singapore

What makes any country’s economy strong is its infrastructure. The infrastructure of the country provides opportunities for trade and development. The highly technological and advanced infrastructure of Singapore has attracted many multinational companies to open offices and factories in the country. The road and transportation network is highly efficient which eases the transportation of goods from one place to another.

They have committed to improving environmental conditions both on ground and in air. At one time they have many different projects going on which all have one aim- to reduce pollution and better the environment for all living things. One of the key initiatives is the Harapan Rainforest Initiative. Singapore Airlines is the only airline company to be a part of this brilliant project. The aim is to conserve and protect this rainforest which is home to many different species of birds and plants. The airline has vowed to protect it from any illegal logging or construction of oil plants. Singapore Airlines is also part of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Users Group. This group makes sure that the dependency on fossil fuels is reduced and more sustainable options are created. The future use of fuels is also discussed and certain goals are set which have to be met annually. The group is doing an excellent job and it is no less than an honor to be a part of it.

The Secret of Singapore Airlines

What most people do not know is that Singapore Airlines is one of the most cost effective airlines in the world. This quality clearly shows that Singapore Airlines have excellent staff that is willing to help it be the best airline in the world.

The flight crew is pictured on June 2, 2009 in Roissy-en-France, northern suburb of Paris, after the world's biggest passenger jet, an Airbus A380, made its first commercial flight to Paris with the arrival at Charles-de-Gaulle airport of the Singapore Airlines flight. Singapore Airlines, who has ordered 19 of the long range jets and has options for six others, already runs A380 flights to Sydney, London, Tokyo, Dubai, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Auckland, Toronto and Bangkok. The leaders and managers should also be praised here as they have worked hard and thought of innovative ideas to reduce their cost and increase their quality. Maintaining an excellent quality yet also keeping the costs low is a very tricky job, one that many people have failed at. If Singapore Airlines continue to do as they are doing, they will be a force to watch out for.

Ideas to Write Creative Photo Essay Writing

How to Write a Photo Essay?

In the past couple of years, media has taken over our lives. From the usual TV channels to the traditional movies we are now standing in a place where anything can happen. Our world has advanced technologically in many ways. We can now do anything just by sitting at home and having the right equipment. This equipment which was thought to be very expensive before can be easily bought now with a little saving. You can do anything that interests you. There are so many fields and options to choose from. Some people have an interest in photography. In the past, getting famous for photography was very rare as people did not get to witness the magic that photography is. But now that social media has grown and people can easily post their work of art on internet one can get popular really easily. There are many different ways you can use photography. One of these ways is called a photo essay. A photo essay is not as complicated as it sounds. It is actually a collection of images and photographs designed and put together in a way that a brilliant story is being told through them. It can be any happening or any feeling being expressed from the beginning to the end. It is used by many famous journalists in their writings. To give you a clearer idea, it can be said that a photo essay is just like any other normal essay, just that instead of words you use pictures to describe the scene. The characters, the settings, the actions- everything is depicted by photographs. The verbs and the nouns and the adjectives are all the colors in the pictures. If you are new to creating photo essays then you must read on to understand how to write them and make them perfect.

First Step is to Research about Photo

The first and foremost point to remember before starting your photo essay is to do your research. You have a topic- what do you know about the topic? Is it something common or is it something unusual? You must answer these questions before starting your work. Take a paper and write down all the points that come to your mind related to your topic. Make up a story first so that you know what things you have to include in your essay. Just like the normal essays you write this essay will also have an introduction, a main body and a perfect conclusion. For example if the topic is “Sweet Sixteen” you should spend time with the birthday girl/boy before the actual party day. Document their shopping and preparation days. Then document the whole birthday from the morning to the last person leaving the party. After that take one or two photographs of the day after the birthday. You must be well researched so that you can produce an excellent story and photo essay.

Shoot Everything but use only Somethings

You are a photographer. The only thing you have is a camera. This camera will make your photo essay. The only thing you can do wrong here is to take very less pictures of the things you need to add in your photo essay. That is why we appreciate shooting everything. You can never go wrong if you have extra pictures but if you do not have enough pictures then your work will be left incomplete and will be very abrupt. An abrupt essay is no fun to read. Everything is jumbled up in it and nothing makes sense. Similarly in a photo essay if the story is abrupt then your reader will not understand the main story clearly and a beautiful thing will be destroyed. Do not be shy when taking pictures. It is your work and right to take pictures. The people you are shooting might get tired by the end of you work but that only means you are doing your job well and that the photo essay will be exceptional. Trust me, the people will not complain once they see what you have produced. You need supporting images to compliment your real story. Keep this in mind too so that you do not focus only on the main things. The sidelines can sometimes make great stories too.

Express the Emotions on the Piece of Paper

What most photo essay writers do not do is add emotions. They have perfect pictures but those pictures do not really have any feel to them. They just show images of the things that everyone can already see. You as a photographer and as a writer need to take shots which show emotion.

Anger, joy, guilt, remorse- depict these feelings using colors and angles. Of course, the people in the picture play a main part in showing these emotions too, but you cannot guide them all the time. Leave them to their natural habits. You should capture the scene in a way that shows all and communicates with the audience.

Show your Story to any Expert before Finalizing It

Just like you write a first draft in any English essay, you must also make up a first draft of your photo essay. This first draft does not have to be perfect. It should however tell the main story and should have a sequence to it. When you are done with this first draft, go through it and find the things you think are perfect in it and the things that can be improved. Write them down. Edit your work. Show this new work to a friend or some senior who can analyze your work. They can better judge it and will tell you further if things can be improved. You should show them the other images that can be used too so that if a better replacement can be found then use that. Once you have done this, move on to finalizing your work. Edit it properly. Retouch it and you are good to go. Your photo essay is ready.
